Spotting After Ovulation, What Gives?

Let's talk about spotting... specifically when it happens in the Luteal Phase (AFTER ovulation + BEFORE your next period starts)

How to spot spotting (lol) during this time ...

🩸 First things first, spotting is NOT your period. Day 1 of your cycle (& your period) is not until you're bleeding enough to need a tampon/menstrual cup. Spotting can be pink, red, or brown in color.

✨ Normal spotting = 1-2 days before your period begins.
✨Abnormal spotting = 3+ days before the period begins or in a row. *If this is something that happens consistently for you, get your hormones checked! with an FMD*

What can cause spotting in the Luteal Phase?

After you ovulate, progesterone is the hormone that enters the scene and maintains your uterine lining in the second half of your cycle until your next period comes. Spotting during this time can be a potential sign of insufficient PROGESTERONE. If your progesterone levels aren’t adequate, or if progesterone drops too soon or too quickly, some of the endometrial lining may shed.

Is this YOU? What should you do next...

#1. Confirm if you're ovulating. This is a big one. If you are not ovulating, you will not be producing progesterone. [we’ll cover this in a future post]

#2. Add in progesterone boosting foods & lifestyle adjustments.
✨Add in foods high in B6, Vitamin C, Magnesium and Zinc
✨Reduce your stress. Chronic stress increases the secretion of cortisol at the expense of sex hormones like progesterone.
✨Get in your healthy fats! We need it to create hormones.
✨Reduce as much inflammation as you can from all areas of your life... aka things like excess sugar, processed oils, toxic products, etc.
✨Supplement with Vitex. Has been shown to support healthy progesterone levels (check with your doc first!).

*Something to keep in mind: spotting could also be caused by infection, illness, stress, conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, cysts, adenomyosis, birth control, etc.*
